Several cantons in the province of Tungurahua benefited from the delivery of nutrition kits by ChildFund, an international non-profit organization.
The entity focuses on generating the comprehensive development of children and adolescents in safe spaces without violence Patate, Pelileo, Píllaro and Ambato were the main beneficiaries of the delivery of these food kits.
This activity was carried out based on the nutrition and health status indicators of adolescents, delivered by the Ministry of Health. This State portfolio will monitor and implement workshops on healthy eating and nutrition so that they can improve their eating habits during this period and also know how they should feed their children after their birth.
Additionally, adolescents will also receive guides and workshops on newborn stimulation, health in the first years of life, sexual and reproductive health, prevention of gender violence and sexual violence.
According to figures from the Provincial Government of Tungurahua, at the national level, 18% of pregnant women suffer from anemia. In the province, chronic malnutrition reaches 19% and its incidence in girls and boys under 5 years of age has increased by two percentage points since 2013.
This situation has worsened in the last year, as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has decreased family income and restricted access to different foods.
There were 380 nutrition kits that were given to adolescents and young people under 19 years of age who were pregnant.
This contribution seeks to provide support to young people and adolescents on how to maintain a varied and balanced diet that promotes their health.(I)
