Aebe and GIZ signed an agreement to generate information available to small producers
With an investment of $191,803 (167,505 euros), the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) contemplates the expansion of its statistics observatory, in order to turn it into a pioneering tool at the national and regional level, which will collect information from banana production, import and export levels.
This, thanks to an agreement reached with the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ, for its acronym in German) through the Sustainable Chains Project, which proposes the generation of information available to small producers as input for decision-making on the factors that affect in production cycles.
AEBE represents 70% of the country's banana exports.
In this way, it is planned to strengthen the capacities of 4,792 small producers, so that they can use information as a tool to improve productivity performance and reduce levels of shrinkage, that is, the volume of fruit that is not meets quality standards for export.
Ragna John, coordinator of the Ecuador Sustainable Chain Project, indicated that GIZ has great expectations for this cooperation that will allow us to strengthen and create connectivity in the banana sector in a sustainable way.
“For GIZ, it is a pleasure to be able to collaborate with AEBE in order to provide added value focused on small producers,” said the director.
For his part, José Antonio Hidalgo, executive director of AEBE, indicated that with this inter-institutional cooperation the union ratifies the commitment to the sector and the country by expanding and strengthening the Banana Statistical Observatory, to turn it into a powerful tool at the national and international level. .
