In El Oro they seek to increase rice production from 4 to 10 tons per hectare, with a new variety

The INIAP-Impacto rice variety was launched by Iniap last November, in Guayas, along with another variety, Elite.

The new variety of rice calledINIAP-Impactthat heNational Institute of Agricultural Research (Iniap)presented at the end of November of last year along with the Elite variety, in the Santa Lucía canton, in Guayas, arrives in the province of El Oro.

This, through the signing of an agreement between Iniap, theEl Oro Prefecture, theMinistry of Agriculture and Livestock, and theTechnical University of Machala, which seeks to publicize the new variety and ensure that farmers dedicated to planting rice have better results in their production, in addition to improving their profitability when harvesting and marketing.

Iniap launched Élite and Impacto, two new varieties of rice resistant to pests and diseases

Javier Lupú, director of Productive Development of the Prefecture, pointed out that the identification and development of projects that generate a positive socioeconomic and environmental impact for the region through research has given excellent results with new varieties of rice, which will be launched for farmers in the sector and the province.

The INIAP-Impacto variety is more resistant to pests and diseases, has better milling quality and has a higher productive yield.

"We are talking about 90 to 100 quintals of rice per hectare, which will improve the living conditions of the producer, who will be able to put a new variety of rice on the national and international market," he explained.Clemente Bravo, prefect of El Oro, during the launch.

This new variety is grown in the experimental farm La Cuca, located in the La Cuca parish, in the Arenillas canton, where the Agricultural Research Center of the province which has an approximate area of ​​40 hectares.

The farm was created approximately 40 years ago in order to carry out training processes, technical advice and transfer of technologies applied to the agricultural sectors.

Regarding the new variety of rice, the Prefecture indicated that the research produced good results.

With a performance potential of8at 10 tons per hectare, tolerance to pests and diseases, long, crystalline grain with good milling and culinary quality, it is projected that this new material will increase the farmer's production which in previous years was between 3 and 4 tons per hectare, due to inappropriate planting of susceptible varieties.
