In 2021, 99,940 tons of fresh pineapple fruit for export were certified, which meant 17 % more fruit sent to international markets than in 2020, according to figures from the Agency for Regulation and Control Fito and Zoosanitary (Agrocality).
The entity stressed that last year 2,850 shipments were made towards 18 destinations worldwide, where markets such as Chile, the Netherlands, United States, Argentina, Germany, New Zealand and Russia, such as those with the greatest amount of fruit sent, although at the moment there are phytosanitary requirements established so that the fresh pineapple fruit can be exported to 38 different countries.
Fresh pineapple is part of the exportable supply of fruits that in 2021 bordered around $ 178 million, according to figures from the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (Fedexpor). This segment, which does not include bananas, the country's main export fruit with $ 3,485 million, had a 10 % growth in relation to 2020.
The agency indicated that it maintains the registration of 34 pineapple production sites for export, where the post -registration controls for monitoring and verification of the general phytosanitary conditions of the production places are carried out.
There are also 100 collection centers, at the national scale, where the fruit is inspected and shipments are prepared around the world. Pichincha (28), Guayas (24), Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (16) and Los Ríos (11) are the provinces that have the most centers.
