First Binational Ecuador - Colombia Meeting on the Fight against Fusarium Race 4 was held in Guayaquil

Juan José Pons, counselor for the protection of the banana sector, said the fungus "walked" for the country, but that its presence is not yet confirmed.

The Guayas governorate was the site chosen for the first Binational Ecuador-Colombia meeting to be held in the fight against the Fusarium Raza 4 plague.

This afternoon this event was held with the participation of the president Guillermo Lasso Mendoza where a plan was analyzed that seeks to protect the industry.

Also present were authorities of Colombia, representatives of the Association of Marketing and Export of Banana (Acorbanec), the Association of Exporters (AEBE), Agroban and delegates of the health entities of the Ministries of Agriculture.

The meeting is sought that the fungus does not spread through the banana territories of the two main producers in South America.

Ecuador has been carrying out actions on borders and farms the installation of biosecurity systems.

The Fusarium Raza 4 (Foc R4T) is in Colombian territory and the plantations were isolated. And in 2020
It reached Peru, where it was also controlled, according to that country authorities.

Juan José Pons, presidential counselor for public policies for the protection of the banana sector, said the fungus "walked" for the country, but that its presence has not yet been confirmed.

"That is why we cannot be 100 % sure that it is not in Ecuador," he said.

Another of the actions that have been developed during the last weeks was the installation of the Interinstitutional Labor Committee for the Prevention of Entry of Fusarium Oxysporum F.SP. Cubense Raza 4 Tropical (Foc R4T) to Ecuador. This committee was led by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Tanlly Vera.

The Interinstitutional Committee aims to contribute its technical and scientific experience for the establishment of phytosanitary prevention measures and the optimization of the actions contemplated in the National Contingency Plan for Foc R4T.

According to Ministerial Agreement 060, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Technical Table is formed by the highest authority of this State Portfolio, as well as the Undersecretary of Strengthening of Musaceae and Marketing; the Fito and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad); the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP).
