Ecuadorian government offered support to Peru due to suspicion of Fusarium race 4 in banana plantations

The Minister of Agriculture, Xavier Lazo, pointed out that although there is no official confirmation of the alert, measures have been activated.

Ecuador offered technical and operational support to Peru due to the suspicion of the presence of the fungusFusarium raza 4in a five-hectare banana field located in Suliana-Piura, an area in the north of the neighboring country.

The Minister of Agriculture, Xavier Lazo, pointed out that although there is no official confirmation of the alert, they have offered support to the neighboring country for the evaluation of the suspected fungus.

The National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa)disclosed that it sent field samples to the Plant Health Diagnostic Centers Unit for the corresponding analyzes and to rule out the presence of said quarantine pest in a plantation in Suliana.

Lazo maintained that the plague is not present in Ecuador, but teams are being mobilized to strategic points to establish epidemiological fences in accordance with the risk map.

Additionally, there are brigades and commands of technicians prepared and trained against race 4.

The minister indicated that controls have also been activated on containers entering the country and disinfection arches have been installed.

“We are prepared and activated for this alert,” said the Minister of Agriculture, who added that the contingency plan was updated in December of last year.

The health authorities of Peru have indicated that the results of the analyzes they have ordered to confirm or rule out the presence of the fungus in their territory will be ready in the coming days.

As a preventive measure in the neighboring country, phytosanitary actions were adopted in the sector and peripheral areas to prevent the spread of the pest. However, the entity pointed out that since 2012 preventive actions have been taken with the implementation of molecular biology diagnostic methods.
