Ecuador is positioned as the first pineapple exporting country in South America

Ecuador appears as the first pineapple exporting country in South America, affirms the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries.

In fact, the State Portfolio points out, thanks to the good performance of fruit shipments, it has also allowed it to be positioned as The eighth supplier worldwide. The Ecuadorian pineapple exported, in addition, has certifications such as the Global GAP, Rainforest Alliance and Basc.

Between January and November 2021, Piña exports from Ecuador reached $ 46 million, in accordance with the records of the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters(Fedexpor). The figure is 22 % more than the same period of 2020 when $ 37 million were sent and 16 % if compared in 2017.

This means that in 2021 the highest amount of fruit shipments worldwide was reached. In fact, in tonnage Ecuador also grew.The country went from exporting 75,573 tons in 2020 to 90,186 tons until November last year.

The variety exported by the country is Golden Sweet and is cultivated, mainly, in Santo Domingo. Until 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture recorded that there was a production of 104,059 tons of fresh pineapple nationwide.

Main destinations

The first commercial destination of Ecuadorian pineapple is the European Union. In that block there are Holland and Germany as two of the main buyers.

Pablo Ribadeneira,President of the Agroedan exporter, explained that a factor that benefited that Ecuador's fruit is positioned in countries in South America was that competitors like Colombia decreased their shipments. In the specific case of the firm, in the last year there was a good demand performance in southern cone countries such as Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, where eight weekly containers are sent on average.

According to data from the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries, the Pineapple Production Activity generates 2,500 jobs.
