TPG moved 1.87% less containers compared to the first quarter of 2021, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and other external factors

The terminal moved 124,674 containers (20 and 40 feet), 2,371 less than from January to March 2021.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began on February 24, as well as other external factors continue to be felt in the Ecuadorian economy, now in the movement of seaports.

During the first quarter of 2022, in theGuayaquil Port Terminal (TPG)69 vessels were received, which meant the mobilization of124,674 containers(20 and 40 feet),2,371 fewer containersthat in the first quarter of 2021 when they mobilized127.045,that is, the1.87% lessif the two periods are compared.

Regarding the difference, Luisenrique Navas, manager of the TPG, He confirmed that it was due to external factors that have affected trade worldwide, although he assured that cargo volumes at the terminal have been maintained.

“The figures show that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has affected international trade. Added to this are the closures of some ports in Asia, due to the total isolation of some cities due to the high number of COVID-19 infections. Likewise, problems continue in the port logistics chain worldwide,” the TPG reported when consulted by Diario EL UNIVERSO about the 1.87% movement.

Meanwhile, Navas mentioned that among the main Ecuadorian products that were exported during the first 90 days of the year are banana, shrimp, wood, canned fish, minerals and cocoa, which were transported to China, Chile, India, Japan, Argentina, United States, among others.

The largest percentage of imports is comprised of chemicals, resins, paper and derivatives, electronic equipment, various merchandise, metals and vehicle spare parts.
