International air traffic in the Andean Community decreased 75% in 2020

The drop in Colombia reached 78.6%, followed by Peru, with 76%; Ecuador, with 68.3%, and Bolivia, with 66.7%.

International air passenger traffic in the countries of the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) decreased by 75.8% in 2020 as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, the integrating body reported this Tuesday.

The general secretary of the CAN, Jorge Hernando Pedraza, indicated that in 2019, 33,793,000 passengers from all over the world were transported at the international airports of the four member countries.

During the virtual conference “Impact of covid-19 on CAN air transport”, Pedraza specified that this figure fell in 2020 to 8,179,000 passengers in the Andean Community.

The general secretary of the CAN explained that Colombia was the country with the greatest decrease in passenger air traffic last year, while the smallest drop occurred in Bolivia.

In that sense, the drop in Colombia reached 78.6%, followed by Peru, with 76%; Ecuador, with 68.3%, and Bolivia, with 66.7%.

The secretary general added that, according to the information provided by the civil aviation directorates of the CAN, intra-community air traffic also decreased from 6 million passengers in 2019 to 1,391,000 in 2020.

On the other hand, the international entry and exit of cargo and mail by air decreased by 20.4%, going from 972,233,000 tons in 2019 to 773,586,000 tons in 2020.

Pedraza said he hopes that the gradual arrival of vaccines to the countries of the region will “restore the confidence” of travelers and consumers and help to relax health restrictions and advance the normalization of air traffic in the CAN.

The virtual conference “Impact of covid-19 on CAN air transport” was organized by the General Secretariat and by Colombia, the country that holds the pro tempore presidency of the organization, and had the participation of representatives from the four community countries.
