China asks the US to eliminate tariffs and adjust policies to improve bilateral relations

Relations between the United States and China deteriorated greatly during Donald Trump's four years in office.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the United States on Monday to adjust its policies, eliminate the tariffs it imposed on Chinese products, and abandon “prejudices and unjustified suspicions” about the Asian country to improve relations, battered during the era of former President Donald Trump.

“We hope that the United States will adjust its policies as soon as possible, remove the tariffs it imposed on Chinese products, and lift sanctions on Chinese companies and institutions. The US has to abandon the irrational suppression of China's technological progress,” Wang said at a forum on ties between the two countries, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry website.

Likewise, Wang urged the US to stop “defaming the Communist Party of China (CPP)” and “supporting separatists seeking Taiwan independence.”and called on the new Joe Biden administration to refrain from “undermining China's sovereignty and security with attacks on Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet.”

Regarding the last two regions, Wang said that “they are an example of the progress of human rights in China,” and that they have benefited from policies to eradicate extreme poverty in the country.

The diplomat acknowledged that in recent years bilateral ties had hit rock bottom and reached their lowest point “since diplomatic relations were established” and blamed the previous Trump administration for having made “major errors in judgment.”

“The repressive measures he implemented caused incalculable damage,” considered the chancellor.

According to Wang, “the new US government is evaluating its foreign policy. We hope that the United States will return to rationality for a healthy development of its ties with China.”

For relations between the two to return to the right path, it is necessary to “tear down the walls of intolerance” and try to “better understand China,” as well as “respect each other” and “not interfere in each other's affairs,” Wang said.

“We cannot think about changing, suppressing or defeating the other”

“We cannot think about changing, suppressing or defeating the other. That's going nowhere, and it's simply not possible. China is open to dialogue, as always. We hope to maintain frank communication with the United States,” said the head of Chinese diplomacy.

Wang added that China is prepared to coordinate policies and work with the United States in the fight against Covid-19, climate change and global economic recovery, three areas that he described as of utmost urgency.

Finally, he called for improving exchanges between the two countries at a cultural or educational level, which, in his opinion, had been “unnecessarily poisoned” during the Trump era.

Relations between the United States and China deteriorated greatly during Trump's four years in office.to the point that the two countries are experiencing one of their worst moments since they established relations in 1979.

In addition to the mutual imposition of trade tariffs, the situation led to the closure of the American Consulate in the city of Chengdu, in response to the previous closure of the Chinese one in Houston.

To this we must add the inclusion of Chinese companies on the list of the US Department of Defense accused of being controlled by the Chinese Army or the accusations regarding the origin of the coronavirus, of the new Chinese security law for Hong Kong. or for the human rights situation of Muslim minorities in the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang.
