Ecuador and Canada took the first step to begin a process of negotiating a trade agreement between both nations.

Julio José Prado, Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries of Ecuador, met via telematics with Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade of Canada. During the meeting, several topics were discussed, such as trade opportunities, bilateral cooperation and the country's vision of trade openness, Prado specified.

Prado described the meeting with Ng as excellent. He revealed that they agreed on the steps to explore a trade agreement and that, subsequently, technical teams from both countries will meet to outline a roadmap.

In addition, he announced that he will make an official visit to Canada this year.

Canada is one of the countries with which Ecuador considered signing trade agreements. Last March 2, during a visit to the Logistics and Industrial Park being built by DP World Posorja, Prado indicated that they expected to begin talks with the North American country and that they will continue seeking agreements with the United States, Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Canada is the tenth destination for Ecuadorian exports, according to figures from last March from the Ministry.
