Cervecería Nacional foresees an increase of one ton per hectare in barley production by 2022 and to go from 2.5 tons, which are currently produced, to 3.5 tons per hectare, and with this also strengthen the relationship with small farmers within of the Our Sowing program.
This program began in 2019 to develop malting barley in Ecuador that is used in the production process of the Nuestra Siembra beer brand, made with national ingredients and which was launched in July 2020. Now it presents a new variety called Nuestra Siembra Inti, with which there will be greater demand for raw materials, according to the company's projections, which showed the results of the program generated in 2021 and so far in 2022.
The program includes an investment of $12 million until 2025, to benefit more than 2,000 farmers, as well as more than 170,000 people who are part of the production chain.
The project has developed rice, corn and barley crops in ten provinces of the country: Guayas, Los Ríos, Carchi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolívar, Chimborazo and Azuay.
Meanwhile, as a result of Contract Planting, the company highlighted the decrease in the cost of the service between 35% and 50%, as well as the decrease in production costs.

“Less fertilizers, fewer seeds, better crop development and reduced crop losses have been used. Traceability is guaranteed through BanQu, a fully digitalized platform that provides visibility to the entire supply chain,” Cervecería Nacional reported.
In 2021, more than 12,000 hectares of barley were planted and more than 20,000 tons of raw materials (rice, corn and barley) were purchased in Ecuador, benefiting 1,065 farmers and more than 5,000 people indirectly.
This meant an 85% increase in productivity, on average for the three ingredients. Likewise, 2,288 technical visits were carried out, 904 people were trained and 12 agricultural machinery was delivered to farmers for proper modernization and to improve their productivity, which benefited 377 people. In addition, $50,000 in credits were provided.
Meanwhile, so far in 2022, more than 1,000 new farmers have been added to the benefits of the program and more than 10,000 hectares have been planted and an increase of more than 18,000 tons of raw materials purchased from farmers.
In addition, the alliance with BanQu was reinforced to generate traceability and transparency in negotiations with farmers and access to credits at 1% annual interest and up to 30 years of term was achieved, through the alliance with BanEcuador, for farmers who belong to the program, among other results.
Liter of Light Project
Within Contract Sowing, the community of Yacupamba, in the Guamote parish (province of Chimborazo), was provided with 50 self-sustainable energy poles. Which meant a great contribution to their agricultural work from the early hours where before they used flashlights to light their path. The Litro del Luz company from Colombia, a leader in sustainable energy (solar panels), provided technical advice. Each light pole is called ELISA®, which refers to the qualities of the product: energy – light – inclusive – sustainable – affordable.
Each ELISA® provides 4,380 hours of zero-emission illumination per year. The light poles are built with recycled elements such as glass bottles and pipes, they are autonomous and generate their own energy through solar panels and rechargeable batteries.
